MS Dhoni and his brigade are all set to for the big encounter against England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 this Sunday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Also Read: Match Preview: India Vs England – World Cup 2011

Originally, this match was scheduled at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, but the International Cricket Council moved the venue due to delay in renovation work at Eden Gardens. Group ‘B’ teams, India and England, will play their second match in the ongoing tournament.

Two days before the match between India and England, Indian in-form batsman Virender Sehwag survived an injury scare during the practice session on Friday after being hit on his ribs by Indian bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan. Meanwhile, Sehwag has been declared fit to play.

At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Dhoni may play with two specialist spinners. It is likely that Piyush Chawla may come in the playing XI in place of Sreesanth. And if Dhoni wins toss, he’s likely to opt bat first.

Team India won against Bangladesh in the inaugural match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 by 87 runs. During the match team India scored 370 runs with the help of brilliant hundreds by Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli. Dashing Indian opener scored 175 runs in 140 deliveries, whereas young gun Virat Kohli scored 100 not out. Indian pacer Munaf Patel claimed four Bangladeshi wickets for 48 runs.

The English team started their Cricket World Cup 2011 journey with a win against the Netherlands. In a close fight in the orange city Nagpur, England defeated Netherlands by 6 wickets with 8 balls remaining. After batting first the Dutch team set the target of 293 runs for the English team.

Team India and England met last time in a world cup match during the 2003 Cricket World Cup at Durban in South Africa. In that match Ashish Nehra picked six wickets for 23 runs and India beat England by 82 runs.

Two teams have played 71 times with each other, and India have won 38 matches and England 30.

Given below are the squads of India and England in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

India squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag(vice capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, R. Ashwin, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and S. Sreesanth.

England squad: Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior (wk), Ajmal Shahzad, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy.

With Pakistan having stashed a clean victory into their kitty against a boneless Kenya, the team bus moves along to Colombo, where, on Saturday, they will run into one of the hot favourites to reach the semi-finals and further, Sri Lanka. Both have just seen off a minnow of their own with resounding 200-run thrashings, and being both of the same neighbourhood, pose a threat each would like to see off as early as possible.

The R. Premadasa Stadium, the largest ground in the country, stands built upon a former swampland and bears a marshy wicket which grips and pulls at the ball. Muttiah Muralitharan (surprise, surprise) is the highest wicket-taker on this slow-bowler’s paradise, with 69 victims and would be keen to add a few more to his kitty when the two teams clash this weekend.

Pakistan:

On Wednesday, even as Mohammad Hafeez was thwarted by a freak of a catch, Ahmed Shehzad appeared uneasy at the crease against the Kenyan new ball. While Hafeez’s watchful approach was an effort to climb back up from having been in scratchy form, Shehzad’s betrayed more discomfort than caution, something which is not his wont. The Pakistanis will have figured that they had better be more proactive upfront so as to ensure that bowlers are not allowed to get settled in their lines. Umar Akmal may have given much credit for his sparkling innings at Hambantota to the patronage of Captain Shahid Afridi, but he will know that his form at no. 6, with Afridi and Abdul Razzaq to follow, is invaluable.

Though Shoaib Akhtar’s niggardly economy rate of 2.00 per over on Wednesday was wrought bowling to the sub-international side that Kenya brought along to this tournament, his genuinely probing lines and variation in the short five-over spell bode danger for the Sri Lankan openers come Saturday. On the slow, dull track at the Premadasa, Shahid Afridi’s rapid leggies may not rattle the Lankans as much as they did the Kenyans, but with his mixed bag and smart bowling, trust him to come up with lines, lengths and speeds tailor-made to the surface.

Pakistan have highly probable wins over Canada, New Zealand and Zimbabwe – before they have to meet Australia – to look forward to if they take the momentum from the Kenya victory into this match. Suddenly, it seems, the dark-horse has started to shine through.

Sri Lanka:

For the way Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara thrive in each other’s partnership, most opposition teams would consider it a bargain to give the pulverizing Tillakaratne Dilshan an extended stay at the crease just so Sangakkara may not be allowed to pair up with the next batsman in Jayawardene. Once these guys are done thrashing the ball to their fill, out will walk Angelo Mathews, with his enhanced figures versus Pakistan, and average of 80 and strike rate of 107 this year. Chamara Kapugedera and Thillan Samaraweera are both a good mix of attack and solidity and, flanked by the two, Mathews can work up some frenetic shot-making at the death.

Lasith Malinga will rejoin the side after he sat the team’s opening match out with a back strain. Ajantha Mendis and Muralitharan should find this track a treat to bowl on, though there is a slight chance that Sri Lanka might opt for the more economical Rangana Herath in place of Mendis against sub-continental opposition, for whom the mystery spinner isn't that much of a mystery!

With a tight performance against Canada, Nuwan Kulasekara has ensured that Dilhara Fernando will not be spared much of a thought in the minds of the think tank. As such, on this drowsy wicket, Fernando will have had to toil redundantly, breaking his back to eke out the least ounce of bounce, his favoured currency.

The thumb rule for sub-continental teams, when deciding on their team make-up for home matches, seems to be to play a 7-batsmen-4-bowler combination. Having a batting all-rounder at no. 7 and a bowling all-rounder at no. 8 makes the think tank breathe easy (In Pakistan’s case, Razzaq’s form with the bat deems him a batting all-rounder, while Afridi has proclaimed himself a bowling all-rounder). While Thisara Perera, who hits a long ball and picked up wickets during the Asia Cup in 2010, is a prime man to have in an ODI line-up, he has been off-colour with the bat and may not find place in the first-choice Sri Lankan eleven as a pure bowler. He got a game against Canada and chipped in with 3 wickets, but expect him to make way for Malinga.

On Thursday, on a cool Delhi afternoon, South Africa and West Indies will face up at the toss at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Both will have their recent head-to-head stats in mind, and only one of them will be buoyed by it, while the other will hope that the influx of one Ramnaresh Sarwan will ameliorate their woeful record. The Windies will know this to be one of the tougher contests they will have to weather in order to be in a favourable mindset for their upcoming games against easier sides.

The Feroz Shah Kotla has just emerged into the daylight, following the gloom of a 12-month exile, after an India-Sri Lanka fixture had had to be abandoned with the pitch resembling a minefield more than a cricket wicket. Players of neither team are, however, familiar with this pitch – South Africa have never played an ODI here, and West Indies visited here last in 1989. So, even if the pitch misbehaves, both teams would perhaps have to give it the benefit of the doubt. While the cold of Delhi will seem more homely to South Africa, the men from the Caribbean may wish they had brought some jumpers made out of caribou skin!

South Africa:

Jacques Kallis, having resumed services after being out with an injury in the series against India, showed no caution or appearance of alienation in the warm-ups, when he got on top of the Australian attack with an attacking 46 in the warm-up. His record in India should stand him in good stead, as will his comfort playing spin. The salt-n-pepper combo of Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla should ensure a good platform is invariably set up for the effervescent AB de Villiers, the reliable JP Duminy and the form-batsman Faf du Plessis to follow.

Dale Steyn has not climbed up to the top of the rankings with nothing to show for it. He has the pace, the swing and the attendant venom to trouble the likes of Chris Gayle with the new ball. Steyn’s partner Morne Morkel, blessed with speed and bounce of his own, has managed not to get eclipsed by him, and looked to have become readily acclimatized to the conditions in the subcontinent. Leggie Imran Tahir, in his first appearance on the international circuit, might as well have been bowling from behind a smoke-screen for all the clarity batsmen seemed to have about him, as he rustled up some wickets in the two warm-ups. His performance might well get him selected over Robin Peterson. Lonwabo Tsotsobe, though in good form, did not bowl to his potential against the Windies in 2010, as he turned in an average of 27 and economy of 5.50 as against his enviable career average of 19.9 and economy of 4.54, and may be duly targeted.

Of all teams, South Africa will recognise the danger in taking the West Indies for granted. The teams met in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1996 right here in the sub-continent, and the Carribean Kings shocked the Proteas, who were the overwhelming favourites, coming away with a 19-run win.

Kenya were beaten black and blue in their last outing against New Zealand, and the bad news for them is that up next is an even better bowling attack. However, after getting bowled out for 69, things can only get better for the Africans, and they will be desperate to show the cricketing world that they belong on this stage. One can expect a backlash from that opening game debacle, and Kenya will surely buckle down and put up some semblance of a score in their second outing.

To help Kenya achieve that, they have a promising opener in Seren Waters. A boundary-laden century against the Netherlands in a warm-up game showed him off for his form, application and flamboyance. A valuable Collins Obuya at no. 3 will look to take his form into this important match. Steve Tikolo has been Kenya’s second centurion in the past two weeks and holds the middle order together. As was seen in their match against the Kiwis, when the veteran fell cheaply, the batsmen who came after him just could not get going. Rakep Patel will look for the big ones once he gets his eye in.

Among the bowlers, Nehemene Odhiambo has performed consistently, with 7 wickets over four practice games. He will be partnered by spearhead Peter Ongondo, who has an economy rate of 4.50, and assisted by the bowling all-rounder Thomas Odoyo. Left-arm spinner Shem Ongoche has been among the wickets, as has Tikolo with his own brand of off-breaks. Sadly, due to the ineptitude of the batting unit, the bowlers had practically nothing to defend in the match against New Zealand, and their contribution was limited to just 8 overs. Given an opportunity to play a full game, the Kenyan bowlers will hope to put on a good showing against Pakistan.

With all their batsmen having performed equally poorly in their last outing, it is highly unlikely that Kenya will make any specific changes to their side, and one can expect the same starting eleven to take the field.

Form guide:

Pakistan:
Feb 18, 2011 - Lost to England by 67 runs
Feb 15, 2011 - Defeated Bangladesh by 89 runs
Feb 5, 2011 - Lost to New Zealand by 57 runs
Feb 3, 2011 - Defeated New Zealand by 41 runs
Feb 1, 2011 - Defeated New Zealand by 2 wickets

Pakistan’s mixed fortunes in recent tournaments can be put down to their disconnect from the advantage of form and momentum – a disease which people forgivingly label ‘unpredictability’. They have the talent and the glory -seekers, but seem to either fall short or overshoot.

Kenya:
Feb 20, 2011 - Lost to New Zealand by 10 wickets
Feb 15, 2011 - Lost to Netherlands by 2 wickets
Feb 12, 2011 - Lost to West Indies by 61 runs
Feb 8, 2011 - Defeated Ireland by 3 wickets
Feb 6, 2011 - Defeated Afghanistan by 49 runs

The first match of the series was a nail biting thriller which England managed to win off the last ball. The defeat added to Australia's huge bag of disappointments. Much as they have throughout the tour, both teams go into the match - the second and final T20 - in contrasting form.

Australia have tried everything possible to get that elusive victory: Cameron White was named captain, Tim Paine was made his deputy, some new faces were introduced and veteran Brett Lee was brought back. However, neither the changes in personnel, nor the changes in leadership and format led to a change in Australia's fortunes. It almost seems as if the Aussies have forgotten how to win. The first T20 game depicted Australia's recent woes in more ways than one: Shane Watson continued his good form, the middle order collapsed, the bowlers leaked runs and Australia ended up losing the game. The loss was also their 5th consecutive defeat in the shortest format - they have lost all T20 matches since their famous World Cup semi final victory against Pakistan.
