On Thursday, on a cool Delhi afternoon, South Africa and West Indies will face up at the toss at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium. Both will have their recent head-to-head stats in mind, and only one of them will be buoyed by it, while the other will hope that the influx of one Ramnaresh Sarwan will ameliorate their woeful record. The Windies will know this to be one of the tougher contests they will have to weather in order to be in a favourable mindset for their upcoming games against easier sides.

The Feroz Shah Kotla has just emerged into the daylight, following the gloom of a 12-month exile, after an India-Sri Lanka fixture had had to be abandoned with the pitch resembling a minefield more than a cricket wicket. Players of neither team are, however, familiar with this pitch – South Africa have never played an ODI here, and West Indies visited here last in 1989. So, even if the pitch misbehaves, both teams would perhaps have to give it the benefit of the doubt. While the cold of Delhi will seem more homely to South Africa, the men from the Caribbean may wish they had brought some jumpers made out of caribou skin!

South Africa:

Jacques Kallis, having resumed services after being out with an injury in the series against India, showed no caution or appearance of alienation in the warm-ups, when he got on top of the Australian attack with an attacking 46 in the warm-up. His record in India should stand him in good stead, as will his comfort playing spin. The salt-n-pepper combo of Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla should ensure a good platform is invariably set up for the effervescent AB de Villiers, the reliable JP Duminy and the form-batsman Faf du Plessis to follow.

Dale Steyn has not climbed up to the top of the rankings with nothing to show for it. He has the pace, the swing and the attendant venom to trouble the likes of Chris Gayle with the new ball. Steyn’s partner Morne Morkel, blessed with speed and bounce of his own, has managed not to get eclipsed by him, and looked to have become readily acclimatized to the conditions in the subcontinent. Leggie Imran Tahir, in his first appearance on the international circuit, might as well have been bowling from behind a smoke-screen for all the clarity batsmen seemed to have about him, as he rustled up some wickets in the two warm-ups. His performance might well get him selected over Robin Peterson. Lonwabo Tsotsobe, though in good form, did not bowl to his potential against the Windies in 2010, as he turned in an average of 27 and economy of 5.50 as against his enviable career average of 19.9 and economy of 4.54, and may be duly targeted.

Of all teams, South Africa will recognise the danger in taking the West Indies for granted. The teams met in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 1996 right here in the sub-continent, and the Carribean Kings shocked the Proteas, who were the overwhelming favourites, coming away with a 19-run win.
