Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Thillan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Angelo Mathews, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis, Muttiah Muralitharan.
Zimbabwe: Brendan Taylor, Charles Coventry, Regis Chakabva, Craig Ervine, Regis Chakabva/Sean Williams, Tatenda Taibu, Elton Chigumbura, Greg Lamb, Prosper Utseya, Ray Price, Tinyashe Panyangara/Chris Mpofu.
Players to watch:
Zimbabwe was one of the earliest teams to face the artifices of Ajantha Mendis, and have surrendered 22 of their wickets in 8 games against him. At the grippy wicket at Pallekele, he should be harder to pick with his minute turners spinning larger than usual.
Brendan Taylor played a commanding innings of 119 not out against Sri Lanka last June, and has a reasonable average against the team. He was the one batter in the Zimbabwean top-order who stood up and out during the Kiwi debacle. He can handle the new ball, and will neutralize the Malinga threat to some extent.
Prediction: Though the two teams are chalk and cheese in terms of quality, they will be partially equalised by the pitch’s likelihood of providing grip and turn. Spin could be the telling protagonist in this encounter, and Sri Lanka being the better equipped batting-wise, should be able to coast through. The added ace up their sleeve being the yorkers of one Lasith Malinga, which could well run the Zimbabweans over.
