After suffering a big loss at the hands of the Australians, an unsettled New Zealand side will travel to Motera to regain the form they displayed in their opening game against Kenya, when they take on once minnows Zimbabwe on Friday, 4th March at the Sardar Patel Stadium. After securing a thumping 175-run victory over Canada, an upbeat Zimbabwean side will back themselves to beat an inconsistent New Zealand outfit and perhaps pip the Kiwis to a quarter-final berth.

A win for Sri Lanka over Kenya on March 1st meant that co-hosts leapt ahead of Australia and Pakistan on Net Run Rate and will be in all probability be competiting with the two aforementioned sides for top spot in the Group. New Zealand currently occupies the all important fourth spot in the Group A table, with Zimbabwe breathing down their neck. With Canada and Kenya clearly the whipping boys of Group A, this game becomes a virtual pre-quarter-final, much like West Indies' encounter with Bangladesh in Group B, and could well decide which team goes through to the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

Compared to the other flat wickets in India, the Sardar Patel Gujrat Stadium at Motera will give the bowlers a reason to smile. Zimbabwe played their opening game of the tournament at this stadium against Australia and took the cup holders by surprise as they restricted them to a total of 262. Although they failed to chase it down, there were clear signs that this is not quite a 300-run track, and this Zimbabwean side will fancy their chances against a Kiwi team in which the batsmen are not too fond of spin bowling.

New Zealand:

Openers Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum did not look too comfortable against the Australian pacers but Vettori will expect them to get the team off to a good start. Guptill, who scored a brilliant knock of 130 against Ireland in the warm-up match, will back himself to come good against Zimbabwe. McCullum, who on his day can demolish any bowling attack will look to take on the bowlers from the get go. At number three, the Kiwis have their hard hitting batsman Jesse Ryder, who like McCullum is capable of delivering quick runs.

In the middle order, the Kiwis have the likes of Ross Taylor, James Franklin and Scott Styris. Having missed out in the game against Australia, Taylor will be raring to go against Zimbabwe. He will be desperate to convert a good start into a big innings, something he has failed to achieve in the recent past. Further down in the order, captain Vettori will be a key player with the bat as well. In the game against Australia, Vettori’s innings of 44 helped his side get past the 200 mark. The Kiwis also have allrounders in the form of James Franklin and Nathan McCullum who can play important cameos down the order.

In the bowling department, Tim Southee and Hamish Bennett will hold the key in the initial overs. Both men bowled exceptionally against Kenya, picking up 7 wickets and giving away just 29 runs in 11 overs between them. Bennett finished with career best figures of 4 for 16 against Kenya when he ran through the top order. He will look to emulate this performance against Zimbabwe as well. Among the spinners, the onus of performance will be on captain Daniel Vettori. Vettori, who is playing in his 4th World Cup, will look to use the conditions at Motera to his advantage and bowl out Zimbabwe cheaply. The likes of Nathan McCullum and James Franklin will be crucial in the middle overs to dry up the runs. Part-timer Jesse Ryder could also be used on this slow wicket.

Zimbabwe:

The Elton Chigumbura-led Zimbabwe side will be high on confidence after a good win against Canada but will have their task cut out when they face a stronger opponent in New Zealand. Chigumbura’s main concern will be the poor form of his openers Brendan Taylor and Charles Coventry who have failed to get going in the tournament so far.

A lot will rest on the shoulders of the in-form wicket keeper batsman Tatenda Taibu, who scored a scintillating knock of 98 against Canada. He also held a record third wicket partnership for Zimbabwe, with Craig Ervine. The duo put on 181 runs and and took Zimbabwe to a mammoth total of 289. The Zimbabwean middler order consists of captain Elton Chigumbura and fellow all-rounders Sean Williams and Greg Lamb. Chigumbura will be keen to shrug off his poor form and get some runs under his belt. The likes of Williams and Lamb will be very useful with the bat in the lower middle order.

In the bowling department, medium pacer Chris Mpofu will continue to spearhead the bowling attack. But Zimbabwe’s strength will be their spin bowling. Captain Chigumbura will expect a lot from the likes of Ray Price, Greame Cremer, Prosper Utseya and Greg Lamb. In the game against Canada, these four bowled exceptional spells, picking up all ten wickets and going for just 100 runs in about 32 overs.

Probable Playing XI:

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), James Frankin, Scott Styris, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Jamie How, Daniel Vettori (c), Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, Hamish Bennett.

Zimbabwe: Brendon Taylor, Charles Coventry, Tatenda Taibu (wk), Craig Ervine, Elton Chigumbura (c), Sean Williams, Greg Lamb, Prosper Utseya, Greame Cremer, Ray Price, Chris Mpofu.

Players to Watch:

Daniel Vettori: Vettori has experience on his side and needs to inspire his side to believe that they can turn around their poor form and still make the quarter-finals.

Ray Price: Very much like Vettori, this veteran left-arm spinner leads the Zimbabwean attack and has the happy knack of picking up wickets at the top of the order. Should he get Zimbabwe off to a good start, they could well cause an upset.

Prediction:

Although Zimbabwe have momentum on their side going into this game, New Zealand will be a tough nut to crack. Even if their spinners restrict the Kiwis to a reasonable total, the inconsistency in their batting may lead to their downfall. As for the Kiwis, they will come hard at the Africans, because a loss here will put their quarter-final spot in jeopardy. New Zealand are definitely the favourites, but if Zimbabwe can get their batting to fire, they have enough quality performers in their bowling department to pick up a surprise win.
